Fumbling Towards Equity: Addressing race, class, privilege, and other uncomfortable topics in social circus FULL

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Limited Capacity full

Class, race and culture affect our circus teaching in multiple ways, impacting both teacher-student interactions and student-student dynamics within the classroom. Research has shown that even those of us who are strongly committed to inclusivity may harbor unconscious assumptions and biases that undercut our goals of fairness, equity and flourishing for all of our students. This collaborative workshop – intended for any and all circus educators - will help participants recognize the role of racial, cultural and socioeconomic differences in their work and think constructively about how to better reach students from diverse backgrounds. Through a combination of joint discussion, small-group activities and guided exercises, participants will share strategies and gain ideas and tools that they can put to practical use in their future classes. Leah and Kate have been working in social justice and social circus for a combination of over 20 years.
