Shoulder Engagement in Hanging and Handstands, tips and tricks for educating students with a variety of flexibility, from those with a lack of range of motion to those with hyper-mobility. Being able to have your arms overhead in a stable and controlled position is the basis of aerial and hand-balancing. From a solid base students can have greater success. With this in mind, we will cover shoulder bio-mechanics with the arms overhead in both pushing and pulling situations. Assessing common student compensation patterns, we will discuss cues and exercises that will help you help them achieve their goals with strong and safe shoulders. This will be a lecture/discussion format where the participants should feel free to ask questions. Participants will have the opportunity to try the exercises and get feedback on their performance. This workshop is designed for educators and those interested in the human body in a passionate fun and deeply nerdy way. Dr. Emily Scherb is a veteran circus instructor and physical therapist for circus artists.
